How to Prepare Your Backyard for a Pool Installation
This summer, you may have finally taken the plunge to purchase a new backyard swimming pool! Your new pool will provide your family with endless fun and easy access to exercise while increasing the value of your home. For inground and above ground swimming pool installation there are some important steps to take to prepare your yard for the new pool. Here are a few of the most important steps to take before installing your new inground or above ground swimming pool.
Above Ground Pool Installation
Depending on whether you are installing an inground or above ground pool there are different preparation steps to take. For an above ground pool, the preparation is relatively minimal. Once you have selected the size, style, and colour of above ground pool you will purchase, the biggest decision will be determining where it will go in your backyard. You will want to measure your desired location to ensure the new pool will fit and clear the area of any significant debris such as furniture, large plants or trees, gardens, or other features and then remove all the sod through raking.
Above Ground pools cannot be installed on grass. In addition to an area of the appropriate size, you will want to find an area in your backyard that is levelled. You will want the entire area to be within one inch of being level. If it is not, dig down any areas that are too high (instead of building up lower areas). This will help prevent the pool from settling and ensure it is securely installed in your backyard.
Inground Pool Installation
For an inground pool, you will first need to check appropriate zoning and bylaws to ensure the pool can be built in your backyard and where it can go relative to your home. This will include checking for overhead and underground pipes and other utilities that cannot be disturbed when you dig for the foundation.
Once you decide on the size, style, and location of your new inground pool, you will want to remove any major rocks, trees, shrubs, gardens, or other features that could get in the way of construction. Finally, if your yard is sloped, you may want to opt for a semi-inground pool, which will require fewer major changes to the overall design of your new backyard.
