Remove the Cover
Closing the pool was essential for retaining its condition. Part of the closing process was to cover it for the winter season. It’s crucial to protect your pool from debris and algae growth and prevent water evaporation. Thank your winter self, as it helps to reduce the amount of opening tasks that must be completed. Start the pool opening by removing that cover. Be sure to hose it down and thoroughly clean it, as it has probably collected dirty water and debris throughout the winter. Ensure it doesn’t touch the water, which can contaminate the chemistry.
Clean the Pool
Once the cover has been removed, clean any remaining leaves, twigs, and other debris that has made its way into the pool. Don’t forget to check the filter, as debris can clog that once activated. Now that you have taken care of the surface of your pool, it’s time to go in with your vacuum to get to the bottom of your pool to remove any dirt, sand and other particles that settle on the pool floor. If your vacuum doesn’t clean the walls of your pool, be sure to brush the walls and tiles. This helps to reduce falls and injuries that can be caused by slippery surfaces. Additionally, this removes any bacteria and improves water quality for the health and safety of swimmers.
Check the Pool Equipment
It’s crucial to check the condition of your pool equipment in case you need pool maintenance or a replacement. This includes your pool pump, filter, heater, cleaner, and other accessories like lights and sound system, if applicable. Check for any visible damage like cracks, leaks or corroded parts. If you are unsure of damages, consult a professional to ensure your pool is in tip-top shape.
Test the Water Chemistry
To enjoy your pool this summer season, your water chemistry must be at a safe level. Gather your testing supplies, like your water testing kit and testing strips, and collect your samples. Be sure to test your pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. Call a professional to perform the test to ensure it’s done correctly if needed. However, testing your pool should be a regular task throughout the swimming season to maintain proper water balance.
Fill the Pool
The last step is to fill your pool. This is often the result of the cleaning of the pool and evaporation of the water. Source your water simply from a hose and place it in the deepest part of your pool. While this is happening, be sure to monitor the water levels and water chemistry. Once filled, test the water again if you need to readjust the chemistry. Once filled, let the water circulate for a few hours before using your pool.
